The Object Management Group™ (OMG™), founded in 1989, is an international, open membership, not-for-profit computer industry consortium. OMG Task Forces develop enterprise integration standards for a wide range of technologies, including: Real-time, Embedded and Specialized Systems, Analysis and Design, Architecture-Driven Modernization and Middleware and an even wider range of industries, including: Business Modeling and Integration, C4I for Military and Crisis Response, Finance, Government, Healthcare, Regulatory Compliance, Life Sciences Research, Knowledge Management, Software Assurance, Manufacturing Technology, Robotics, Software-Based Communications and Space.
OMG’s modeling standards, including the Unified Modeling Language™ (UML®) and Model Driven Architecture® (MDA®), enable powerful graphical or textual design, execution and maintenance of software and other processes, including IT Systems Modeling and Business Process Management. OMG’s twin middleware standards and profiles are based on the Common Object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA®) and the Data Distribution Service (DDS) and support a wide variety of industries. OMG’s wide-ranging business process and business rules modeling (BPM and BR) solutions, based on the BPMN language, form the basis for a wide variety of BPM solutions for business analysts and IT professionals.
OMG’s members actively shape the future of software standards at OMG meetings where they write, adopt, and maintain the organization’s standards following a mature, worldwide, open process. Member companies benefit from early awareness of emerging standards, and the ability to shape them to fit their architecture and needs. After adoption, the specifications are made available to everyone for free download on OMG’s website, and are maintained by an open, long-term process. The entire industry benefits from the economies and capabilities of standardized software that conform to these specifications.

[edit] OMG’s Standards
OMG issues rapidly growing suites of both industry-specific and general standard software. Based on OMG’s flagship Model Driven Architecture® (MDA®), these standards implement business functions equivalently and interoperable on virtually all popular middle ware platforms including Web Services, XML/SOAP, C#/.Net, Enterprise JavaBeans, and others in addition to OMG’s own CORBA.
OMG’s MDA standard is a powerful tool for modeling complex systems that also helps companies future-proof their technology investment. Modeling standards include the Unified Modeling Language® (UML®), MetaObject Facility™ (MOF™), OMG Systems Modeling Language (OMG SysML™), XML Metadata Interchange® (XMI®), Business Process Modeling Notation (BPMN™), and Common Warehouse Metamodel (CWM™). CORBA, the Common Object Request Broker Architecture, is OMG’s standard open middle ware platform for object-oriented systems; the Data Distribution Service (DDS) supports data centric publish-subscribe semantics. Both middle ware standards support real-time as well as conventional systems.
These specifications combine to form a foundation and framework for multi-platform enterprise interoperability that covers the full software life cycle, allowing organizations to leverage their IT assets and maximize their return on software investment. Implementations of OMG specifications are produced by vendors as products, or by end users and others who need a standard solution to a particular computing or business problem to future-proof their software assets.
The focus of the OMG is not just to create commercial consensus through standards, but also to ensure that the marketplace embraces those standards. OMG continues to nurture the marketplace of interoperable software, one in which users can purchase standards-compliant software “off the shelf.”
Any corporation, agency or other type of organization may join OMG and participate in our standards-setting processes. Our one-organization-one-vote policy ensures that every organization, large and small, has an effective voice in our process. Our membership includes hundreds of organizations, with half being software end-users in over two dozen vertical markets, and the other half representing virtually every large organization in the computer industry and many smaller ones. Most of the organizations that shape enterprise and Internet computing today are represented on our Board of Directors.
